1. actions happening at a particular time in the past 过去某个时候在进行的动作

2. two continuing actions in the past. 两个过去某时在持续进行的动作

3. contrasting continuing and complete actions in the past. 对比过去某时在持续和已经完成的动作

he was watching a tom and jerry cartoon on television at 8:00 pm last night.

he was watching a tom and jerry cartoon on television when he first heard western classical music.

while & when的区别:
while to link two continuing actions 连接两个持续进行的动作，可以翻译为“正在这时”

句型结构：s1+ was/ were doing + while +s2 + was/ were doing.

he was practicing the piano while other children his age were playing games and having fun.

when to link longer, continuing actions with shorter, complete ones. 对比过去某时在持续和已经完成的动作，可以翻译为“当……时候”

句型结构：s1+ was/ were doing + when +s2 +did.  对比以下句子：

he was watching a tom and jerry cartoon on television at 8:00 pm last night.

he was watching a tom and jerry cartoon on television when he first heard western classical music.
